Barrow's Goldeneye Satellite tracking
Telemetry

In 1998 and 1999, biologists from the Canadian Wildlife Service tracked movements of Barrow’s Goldeneye using satellite telemetry. This technique consists of fitting birds with radios that transmit signals to satellites which in turn relay this information to the biologists. In other words, the birds are captured, fitted with a radio, released and then tracked on a (nearly) daily basis from the biologist’s office.

A total of 21 Barrow’s Goldeneyes were tracked during this study. They were captured in southern Québec, along the St. Lawrence River estuary. With this satellite tracking, biologists solved some of the mysteries surrounding the eastern population of Barrow’s Goldeneye. They located, for example, breeding and moulting sites which were still unknown a few years ago. Results from this satellite tracking are available in the form of a Technical Report.
