More than half of the Sanctuary's area is covered with patches of American bulrush, interspersed with various species, including wild rice, three Sagittaria species (erect, grass-like and cuneate-leaved), fragrant water-parsnip, boneset, rice cutgrass, tufted hairgrass, and species of spike rush. The rest of the Sanctuary is characterized by mudflats, rock outcrops and herbaceous and shrubby vegetation. The shrub stratum, which is flooded periodically, is dominated by several species of willow and alder.
